This summer when you and your youth are trying to fight boredom, consider visiting one of Knoxville’s 83 public city parks! Below, MDC Youth Initiatives Coordinator, Maria Valerio, breaks down just a few of the numerous benefits of visiting our parks.

1. Spending time in nature can help reduce stress

Spending time in nature has proven benefits in reducing stress by calming the nervous system and lowering cortisol levels—the hormone responsible for stress. Natural environments engage our senses in a gentle, non-overstimulating way, which helps quiet the mind and shift our focus away from daily worries. Studies have shown that even a short walk in a park or simply sitting under trees can reduce feelings of anxiety, improve mood, and promote a sense of well-being.

2. Playground equipment can help strengthen motor skills for youth

Play sets are great for childhood motor skills development because they encourage a wide range of physical activities that help children build strength, coordination, and balance. Climbing ladders, swinging, sliding, and navigating monkey bars all require the use of both fine and gross motor skills, helping kids develop muscle control and spatial awareness. These playful challenges not only support physical growth but also enhance hand-eye coordination and overall body confidence.

3. Spending time in the sun has proven benefits

Spending time in the sun has several health benefits, including boosting your body’s production of vitamin D, which supports bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. Sunlight can also help regulate your sleep-wake cycle and improve overall well-being by increasing levels of serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone. However, it’s important to enjoy the sun safely—prolonged exposure without protection can lead to skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. To stay safe, always wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapply it regularly, and consider wearing a hat or seeking shade during peak sun hours.

 4. Parks can provide free fun for the whole family

Public parks offer free fun for the whole family, making them a perfect spot for quality time without spending a dime. Families can enjoy a variety of activities like reading together under a shady tree, bringing along a pet for a walk or playtime, letting kids cool off in a splash pad, or riding bikes along winding trails. Parks often have open spaces for games, playgrounds for younger children, and peaceful areas to simply relax and enjoy nature. With something for every age and interest, public parks turn a simple afternoon into a memorable, budget-friendly outing.

5. Visiting our public parks can show your support for the City of Knoxville

Visiting public parks supports the city government and local recreation departments by showing that these spaces are valued and well-used by the community. High park attendance helps justify funding for maintenance, improvements, and new programs, ensuring these green spaces continue to thrive. When families participate in park events or use park facilities, it also encourages local investment and can boost support for future projects. Simply by spending time there, visitors help demonstrate the importance of public parks as vital parts of a healthy, connected, and vibrant community.
