Did you know?

According to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, Hawaii’s religious laws that did not allow men and women to eat together in all occasions ended in 1819, resulting in a large celebration for all men, women, and families to come together to eat, celebrate, and spend time together. This led to a new type of celebration that would come to be known as a luau.

The word “luau” initially represented a feast, but over time, it evolved to be a gathering of food, music, dancing, and celebration.

While MDC’s luau is not meant to be a representation of traditional Hawaiian culture, it does embrace the tradition’s spirit of coming together and celebrating an important cause.
