Active Parenting of Teens is an interactive video and discussion program listed by SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. Through the program’s six workshops, each group is introduced to the biggest struggles facing teens today, including sexual behavior, violence and substance abuse, and learn how to reduce the risks.
Parents learn how to open up the lines of communication, encourage cooperation, promote responsibility and discipline more effectively. The program provides indispensable techniques for overcoming obstacles that threaten family life. Insight about other important issues such as teens online, bullying and depression also will be addressed.
The Youth and Family Development Committee of the MDC Coalition worked on getting Active Parenting classes started in 2014. For yearend 2014, 12 parents completed the program, which well exceeded the goal set. We look forward to getting more parents involved and trained in 2015.
