The Knox County Beer Board has increased fines to send a stronger message to permit holders that selling alcohol to minors is a serious issue.

When businesses are found in violation of alcohol laws, they have two options: either don’t sell alcohol for a defined period of time or pay a fine. More often than not, businesses choose the fine.

Previously, the fine was $500 for a first offense or a 30-day suspension. Now, the increase will be a $1000 fine or a 60-day suspension on a first offense.

A portion of these fines will be allocated to the MDC so we can continue to educate these business-owners and their employees. This funding will help offset the cost of the tools MDC provides to permit holders. MDC thanks the Knox County Beer Board for their commitment to the MDC’s efforts to reduce underage drinking.
