The KPD Inspections Unit is responsible for enforcing all city and state laws and regulations that pertain to alcoholic beverages and vehicles for hire. Part of this responsibility is preparing a report for the Knoxville City Beer Board at each meeting. This report outlines any criminal or traffic offenses that a beer permit applicant may have had in the past or present. To insure that those businesses that posses a city beer permit are operating within the law, officers of the inspection unit conduct numerous bar checks and periodically conduct underage beer stings targeting sales to minors. The unit, in a proactive approach to help prevent sales to minors and underage drinking, provides all beer permit holders with a calendar that shows each day of the year and the legal drinking age. The Unit is also responsible for the registration and vehicle inspection of vehicles for hire such as taxis, limos and shuttle buses. In addition, anyone who wishes to drive a vehicle in this category must come to the Inspection Unit to apply for a driver permit.
